On October 14th, 1922, the first in a ‘series of illustrated articles of the Distilleries of Scotland, Ireland and England’ was published.
A total of 124 distilleries, with more than 640 photographs, would ultimately be profiled anonymously over the next seven years of this tumultuous decade.
These articles painted an enthralling picture of the whisky industry in the ‘Roaring Twenties’ – but were then largely forgotten about for the next 100 years.
Available for the first time as a standalone volume, The Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland has now been published as a special centenary first edition of 1,000 copies.
With hundreds of ultra-high definition images carefully restored by the British Library’s digitization team, this book, the earliest comprehensive photographic survey in existence of its kind, is an indispensable insight into the long-lost past of Scotland and Ireland’s national drink.
Ten articles from The Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland are now available to view online.
Due to the historical significance of this publication, the remaining articles will be made available over the course of 2023.
